Dayton Results
I went 17-14 in the tournament. I was hoping to do better, but that's not terrible. Mostly, it felt like a lot of games came down to simple luck of the draw. Particularly at the end of the game. I didn't have too many interesting 'end game' plays to be honest.

That, and it seemed like my opponents continually were clobbering me with big X plays all week long.

Indianapolis Results

Well, I had a good tournament in Indianapolis last weekend.

The early bird went well. I went 3-0 and finished first in my division.

The main tournament went as expected. I was the #7 seed in Division 1 and had a tough day against tough competition. I finished 2-5 on the day for the main event.

Ardencup Results
I went to Ardencup this weekend.

I'm exhausted, so I'm not going to post a lot of commentary.
I had some good games, I had some bad games.

Overall, I felt like I was off my game a bit. I missed some bingos I know, and I back off of some bingos I saw by (incorrectly) thought were not valid. :(

I finished 12-8. Good enough for 8th place and a set of Ardencup SamTiles. I was hoping to do better though. My rating will probably stay about the same or it might drop a little bit. I was close to expectation though.

In the 8 games I lost, only 2 were "close" loses. I lost to Jacquelyn Fyr twice, and both times the games were winnable. We met again in the KOTH round though, and I won that one to end the weekend on a high note. The other 6 games, I was down by a lot of points early and never really had a chance to get back in the game. I think a late bingo or two might've made a couple of games 'close' (only 40 points loses or so) but the ending wasn't in doubt.

Of course, there were two games were I was done by a lot and came back to win. Ruchi gave up an early 120 point lead to me. And I overcame a 130-point deficit ON MY LAST TURN to beat John Fultz (bingoed with RESIDUE for almost 90 points, and caught him with 22 on his rack). John was a little frustrated he let that game go.

As an experiment, I tracked my racks. Below are the "missed" bingos I had. Those are either 7's I didn't see, or didn't consider and probably would've played. I didn't simulate the entire game.

Game by Game Summary )

I'll be doing Indianapolis in a couple of weeks and Dayton after that.

House - "House II" and "House IV" were the sequels. This was because an unrelated Australian movie used the name "House 3", so, to avoid any conflict, they renamed part 3 to part 4

Knowing - Movie review
Ok, I went to see this Tuesday night. I was a little undecided heading into it. It looked like a decent plot/story, but then again, it had Nicholas Cage who does not have a reputation for being selective about the movies he's in.

This was really good actually. It turned out to be really good sci-fi movie. I mean, that's hard to tell from the previews whether the genre is horror, drama, sci-fi, action/adventure, or something else. Anyways, my expectations weren't real high, and the movie well exceeded them.

The disaster scenes were done really well. The airplane crash aftermath is on the previews, but that whole airline crash scene is a holy shit moment in the movie. My only criticism is that it should've ended about 5 minutes before it did. Again, not spoiling the plot, but there seemed to be a better ending to the movie at one point. But then they had to go and explicitly show what happened to everyone after that point. Didn't seem necessary - although, again there was some cool special effects involved.

If you get a chance, I would definitely recommend this film. It rates a B on my scale.

Oh, and just to put my grading scale in reference:
A - Intend to buy when it comes out on DVD.
B - Well worth seeing in the theater.
C - Probably better for a budget movie or drive-in double feature.
D - Wait for it to play on TNT some Saturnday.
F - Not worth the time spend watching it.

Scrabble Post
So, I went to Bloomington this weekend.

I'm not gonna talk about the NAST much. I played 5 games and lost three of them. I beat the bottom seeded 900-rated player by one point. I lost to Winter because I didn't know GAZABOS. I lost a 130-point lead to Steve Hartsman because I challenged REELINGS, and lost my next turn playing COUFS* (which I must've confused with COIF, CUIF, or COOF). The hard part was I was just going to play FOCUS, but then switched it around.. Not only did I lose the turn (and eventually the game), but it would've blocked is subsequent 40-some point play. :( I lost to Scott Jackson in a complete rout, and then I routed Carol Dustin to end the evening.

The main tournament went much better.

I finished 9-3 on the weekend. Good enough for 3rd place although I was in 1st place heading into the last game. :( In a weird coincidence, the three people I lost to finished 1st, 2nd, and 4th.

My rating will jump up to about 1480 or so. Now I have an odd choice for Ardencup. Should I play up into Division 2, or stay in Division 3? Last time I didn't play up, and I regretted it.
I don't know if I'd have more fun that weekend playing John, Waylena, Daiva, and the usual suspects, or if I've a better time playing stronger competition and getting my ass routinely kicked by the Fiszbeins, Hartsman, and the rest of the Division 2 cast

Decisions, decisions.
